On Sunday, June 12th, we celebrate Children’s Day. While not a well-known holiday, the day is an opportunity to remember children – how important children are in society and the problems and difficulties many face in their day-to-day. The goal of such a day is to invest in children’s future, improve their welfare, and make the world a better place for them. If you have children, this is a great day to take some time off to play with them, talk to them, and figure out what is going on in their lives. The following are 5 things you can do with them on your patio or deck.
PLAY A FAVORITE GAME – What game do your children enjoy playing – a card game, board game, or something even more interactive? Sit out on your patio and enjoy playing with your children, cherishing their laughter, and creating some wonderful memories.
SERVE A FAVORITE MEAL – What better way to say “you’re special” than to serve a meal of their favorite things to eat. Be sure to make it a surprise so that they see it as extra special. Don’t forget to sit and enjoy the meal with them – be with them.
READ TOGETHER – Take the time to sit on the patio and read a book together. If they’re younger, read their favorite story to them. Because this fires up the receptors in the frontal lobe of the brain, the combination of your presence and the stories will make an impression on their mind that they’re likely to remember for years to come.
TALK TO THEM – Try to start a conversation with them about what is going on in their lives. How school is going, their work, their relationship with friends. And remember, you don’t have to try and fix anything – Sometimes they just want to know that you’re hearing them.
